Stellar results see junior students end year on high
Despite a global pandemic presenting unprecedented challenges to learning in 2020, our Junior School students have shown their resilience, dedication and courage by not only surviving but thriving!
November saw some amazing student achievements with international exams, recognitions and awards across the region.
Brilliant ICAS results
Students from Years 2 to 6 took part in ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) exams in Spelling, English, Science, Mathematics and Digital Technologies - with stellar results all round.
Overall students received over 200 nominations including 135 Credits, 94 Distinctions and 21 High Distinctions.
ICAS Assessments are designed to recognise academic excellence. Students are assessed on their ability to apply classroom learning to new contexts using higher order thinking and problem-solving skills.
Top in the state for spelling
Year 5 student, Richard Choi won the ICAS medal for spelling which put him in the top spelling position in New South Wales.
State and national maths champions
Year 4 students took up the challenge of entering the ‘Investigating in Mathematics’ competition run by the NSW Maths Association. The class analysed all athletics carnival results since 2012 to find out if runners are getting faster or slower which saw them place first across NSW. Following their win at a state level, they placed highly commended at the national level.
Newcastle Permanent Maths winners
The Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition is now in its 40th year and continues to grow each year, attracting almost 17,500 students from 294 schools.
Some of the outstanding results included: Luke Ramirez, Year 6 - Equal Third Place; Drew Baker-Jones, Year 5 - Second Place and Daniel Zhang who received the Central Coast Regional Award.
